Healing Money Wounds with Reiki
"To be able to look back upon one's life in satisfaction is to live twice." ~ Khalil Gibran
Money can be a wildly intriguing and sometimes triggering topic because our relationship with it is as personal and private as the relationship we have with our bodies. Just as with health fads or nutrition rules, what works for one person may not work for another. The same is true for how we handle money. When I feel the need to heal my relationship with money, I know there's something deeper beneath the surface that needs attention and tender care.
When seeking healing around our relationship with money, it's important to remember that wealth or poverty, as defined by society, isn't the key issue. What truly matters is how we relate to the money we have and how we understand the flow of life's energy.
I once had a client who worked as an investment advisor for a billionaire in New York City. He shared how his job was to ensure his boss didn’t lose money and to find ways to make more. The fear of loss and the worry of not having enough consumed his boss's thoughts, and I could hear the lack of joy in my client's voice as he spoke. Despite his financial expertise, my client understood more about life and money than just gains and losses. He looked at me and said something I'll never forget: "You're a richer person because you genuinely focus on and appreciate what you have." At the time, it was hard to digest, but deep down, I knew he was right. After years of actively healing my money wounds and cultivating a healthy relationship with money, I could feel the truth in his words.
When we tap into the flow of energy in our lives, we begin to see that money is simply another form of energy. When we engage in activities that bring us joy, truly enjoying ourselves and following our heart or sense of purpose, we find ourselves in a blissful state of flow. What brings you a sense of flow? What activities make you lose all sense of time?
For me, as a chronic overthinker, moving my body forces me to focus on something other than my thoughts, which is quite a relief. Whether it's stretching, walking around the block, or dancing in my room, I feel better instantly, no matter how hard it is to switch gears sometimes. These activities let me know that I’ve just allowed more flow into my life. What do you do that makes you feel lighter the moment you start doing it?
When I was in the early stages of my Reiki business, an opportunity for a vacation came my way. I had never vacationed before in my life. I didn’t know how to take time off to relax—it felt almost like it wasn’t in my DNA. But deep down, I knew that to bring more integrity into my Reiki practice and to serve my clients better, I needed to take breaks now and then. So, I focused on healing the idea of taking a vacation, somehow earning the money for it, and feeling good about closing my business for 10 days.
In an unbelievably magical way, I was cast in a commercial. I wasn’t an actress, had never auditioned, and only a couple actress friends from high school in Georgia, who were also living in NYC, had recommended me to the casting director because they were unavailable. Everything just flowed, and I earned the exact amount I needed for the vacation.
That experience was, simply put, a miracle. It strengthened my belief in the energy of life and how, when we support our well-being, we are always supported in return. I also learned that money is here to help us live meaningful lives, but it isn’t the endgame. Living in the flow of life is the endgame. Sometimes, when I send healing energy to something I need (like that vacation), it’s not always money that shows up, but sometimes the thing itself. Talk about being in flow!
Living and working in NYC taught me about value, abundance, and how to heal the parts of myself that struggled to understand or accept these things. Living in Okinawa has taught me about respect, gratitude, and how surrendering to the present moment can be a faster and more powerful way to access flow than any act of will or "taking" action. Healing our money wounds can teach us so much about living fully, and vice versa—living fully, following our hearts, and doing what feels right can teach us how to have a better relationship with money. It’s like deepening and cultivating our friendships to become better friends. It’s all about having the courage to face the parts of ourselves that are ready to grow.
Ultimately, healing money wounds with Reiki continues to teach me how to live in a constant and dynamic state of flow with life, which is absolutely priceless.
